What changed

Third, it is previewing a public tool that can check supported images for provenance signals.
The details matter. C2PA metadata can carry rich information about creation and edits, but metadata can be stripped during uploads, downloads, format changes, resizing, or screenshots. SynthID is designed to survive more transformations, but it carries less context than signed metadata. OpenAI is explicitly combining the two rather than pretending one signal solves everything.
Google’s parallel announcement widens the ecosystem signal. Google says it uses C2PA Content Credentials across a growing number of generative media tools and is expanding SynthID, including through partners such as OpenAI, Kakao, and ElevenLabs. It also announced an AI Content Detection API through Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

Image generation has moved into work where provenance is no longer optional: advertising, journalism, marketplaces, education, legal review, brand safety, political content, and internal communications.
Better images create more verification pressure. A photorealistic AI image may be useful, but it is also a liability if a team cannot prove where it came from, how it was edited, whether metadata survived, and what the verification result actually means.
