OpenAI published a May 28 customer story saying MUFG is rolling out ChatGPT Enterprise to approximately 35,000 employees at Mitsubishi UFJ Bank. Those examples are still subject to launch details and governance. But they show a larger pattern: banks are no longer only buying AI for employee productivity. They are testing AI as a new front door for financial guidance, account context, and personalized recommendations.
Watch-outs
Financial institutions should not treat this as proof that a general enterprise chatbot is automatically ready for sensitive customer work.
The serious questions are:
- what data can employees paste or upload;
- what custom GPTs are allowed to access;
- how outputs are reviewed before customer use;
- how customer-facing recommendations are explained;
- how audit trails are retained;
- whether AI guidance is advisory, transactional, or both;
- where human approvals remain mandatory.
