Google announced the shutdown of two standalone AI consumer products on the same day: Whisk and Doppl both end April 30, 2026.
Whisk (image generation playground):
- Hosted at labs.google/fx/tools/whisk
- Stops accepting new image generations on April 30, 2026
- Fully offline after that date
- Users should export generated images before the cutoff
Doppl (virtual try-on):
- Standalone app shuts down April 30, 2026
- Core try-on capability moves directly into Google Search and Shopping product listings
- No manual migration required; the feature will appear inside product search results
The pattern: Google ran several experimental AI consumer apps under the Labs brand in 2024 and 2025 as separate products. In 2026 the pattern has shifted to folding successful capabilities into Search, Photos, and Workspace, and retiring the standalone brands. NotebookLM is the counterexample that still runs as its own product; most of the rest are consolidating.
Alternatives for Whisk users:
- Gemini + Nano Banana (Google’s new integrated image gen in the main Gemini app)
- ImageFX (still live, for now)
- Midjourney, Flux, DALL-E 4 via ChatGPT
The retirement list continues to thin out Google’s consumer AI experiments as Gemini becomes the consolidated surface.
