OpenAI Launches $100/Month ChatGPT Pro Tier Targeting Claude Max

OpenAI filled the long-standing gap in its pricing ladder on April 9, 2026. The new $100/month ChatGPT Pro tier sits between $20 Plus and $200 Pro Max. Both Pro tiers now share the same model access; the only difference is usage allowance.

Why OpenAI did this: Anthropic has offered Claude Max at $100/month for most of 2025 and 2026, and heavy Codex users were either paying $200 for OpenAI or switching. The $100 tier closes the obvious gap.

Who this targets: Developers running Codex or GPT-5.4 on coding tasks daily. The Codex allowance is the headline differentiator. Light-to-medium chat users stay on Plus; enterprise buyers go to Business or Enterprise tiers.

Competitive read: Claude Max is now priced identically ($100) but Anthropic differentiates on context window (1M tokens on Opus 4.7 vs 400K on GPT-5.4 Pro) and agent-mode quality. OpenAI differentiates on Codex integration and DALL-E image access.
